摘要
Objective:Theototoxicityofpovidone-iodinehasbeendocumentedinanimalstudies.However,thereislimitedevidenceoftheseototoxiceffectsinhumans.Thisisthefirstreporttoshowtheototoxiceffectsofpovidoneiodineinahumansubject.Patient:A36-year-oldwomancametoourhospitalcomplainingofleftunilateralpersistenthearingloss.Onemonthbeforepresentation,herchildhadaccidentallystruckheronherleftear.Sheappliedapproximatelythreedropsofpovidone-iodine(10%weight/volume)intoherleftauditorycanal.Immediatelyafterapplication,shefeltseverepainandvertigo.Anaudiogramrevealedsevereleftunilateralsensorineuralhearingloss.Magneticresonanceimagingshowedmildenhancementoftheleftvestibuleandbasalturnoftheleftcochlea.Conclusions:Evenasingleapplicationofpovidone-iodinecouldcausesignificanthearinglossanddisequilibrium.Itshould,therefore,beusedwithcaution.
