Sustainableurbanizationisadynamic,multi-dimensionalprocess.Itembracesrelationshipsbetweenallhumansettlements,fromsmalltownstometropolises,aswellasbetweenurbancentresandtheirsurroundingruralareas.Mostcrucially,itincludesnotonlyenvironmentalbutalsosocial,economicandpolitical-institutionalsustainability.Tomovetowardssustainableurbanization,itwillbenecessarytolearnfromrecentexperienceandtodevelopandoperationalisenewideasandapproachestoaddressawiderangeofconcerns.TheWorldSummitonSustainableDevelopmentprovideatimelyopportunitytolookmorecloselyatthechallengesandopportunitiesposedbyurbanization-anopportunitytobroadenthewaysinwhichwethinkaboutsustainabledevelopmentandthemeansbywhichtheglobalcommunityseekstoachieveit.
