IntheAmamaAge,contactsbetweenEgyptanditsvassals,especiallyvassalsinthenorthernCanaan,areattestedintheAmamaLetters.Amurruhasoncebeenapowerfulstateintheeyesofothervassals,asisreflectedbytheAmamaLetters.AmongtheAmarnaLetters,therewereatleast78lettersrelatingtoAmurru.JustasMurnanepointsout,“WhenAmurrufirstappearsonthepoliticalmapofSyriainthefourteenthcenturyB.C.,itisnotastheunifiedcountryitwastobecome,butasaloosegroupingofcitystates,eachunderitsownrulers,”thekingdomofAmurrumayconsistedofmanycity-states.
