Serioushearingandbalanceimpairmentscanoccurasaresultoflossofhaircellsrelatedtoaging,environmentalstresses(suchasnoisesexposure)orexposuretochemotherapeuticdrugs(suchascisplatinandaminoglycosideantibiotics).Becausealargeportionofhearingimpairmentinvolveslossofhaircells,regenerationorreplacementofthesecellsisapossiblealternativetoprostheticdevices1.Researchershavepaidhotattentiontothestudyofinnerearhaircellregenerationforhearingrestorationformanyyears.Besidestheimportantfunctionofhaircells,therearemanyothercontributorsessentialfornormalhearing.Haircellregenerationisoneoftheessentialstepsfortotalhearingrecovery,butnottheonlyone.Inthisarticle,wewillreviewtheprogressesinresearchonhearingloss,stemcellapplicationandhearingrestoration.
