Weinvestigatetheinteractionbetweenapositivemassandanegativeeffectivemassthroughathreemasschainconnectedwithelasticsprings,apairofmassesisdesignedtohaveaneffectivenegativemass,anditinteractswiththethirdpositiveoneasifanequivalenttwo-masschain.Thedynamicsoftheequivalenttwo-masschainshowsthatthetwobodiesmaybeself-acceleratedinsamedirectionwhentheeffectivemassbecomesnegative,theexperimentisalsoconductedtodemonstratethistypeofmotion.Wefurthershowthattheenergyprinciple(Hamilton’sprinciple)isapplicableiftheenergyofthenegativemassunitisproperlycharacterized.Theresultmayberelevanttocompositewithcellsofeffectivenegativemass,theirinteractionwithmatrixmayleadtomorericherunexpectedmacroscopicresponses.
